HARDIN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL CANCER CARE CENTER
The hospital system’s cancer care program was situated in a lower level of the main hospital. The facility lacked natural light, nearby parking, and capacity to grow. The department’s increasing patient load sparked their relocation to an existing retail center not far from the hospital. The new dedicated facility exudes patient comfort and convenience, serves as a signboard for the program in the community, and offers space to grow. Patient centered design principles drove all design decisions, while the staff’s active patient feedback program inspired prominent features like the new infusion furniture and the nature scene images that embrace the space while also offering much needed privacy. The images used throughout the project were taken by local community members as a part of an innovative hospital outreach program. An open plan arrangement for the treatment area allows nurses to monitor their pod of patients efficiently, with purpose built furniture that serves their practical needs while also cleanly concealing patient televisions and periodicals. Bold, uplifting colors accent several areas throughout the building, while wood tones aim to provide a warm, comforting background to every room. A new, state of the art pharmacy sits at the heart of the building, allowing nearly all work related to patient treatment to occur on site and minimize patient wait and treatment times. An extensive expansion plan was developed to ensure that the program will be able to utilize their new home for years to come as the program continues to grow.
