Discover Service Adventure Environments

Discover Service is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing the adventure, challenge, and fun of military service. In the spirit of stoking the unexpected wonder of young people like St. Louis’s CityMuseum, these installations will craft one-of-a-kind, climbable compositions using decommissioned military equipment. The organization will commission, build, and maintain these projects in high visibility, public environments, allowing kids to get up-close to real equipment while encouraging challenging, play-based physical activity.

JRA has taken the creative lead for the project, developing concepts for a variety of equipment in myriad landscapes. Early installations will likely be single pieces set in existing public spaces such as parks and retail properties. As the project grows, the ambition is to develop multi-piece play environments set in dedicated, immersive landscapes. The clients, all of whom are active or retired military leaders, are actively working with public agencies and military surplus entities to source decommissioned equipment, with the additional ambition to tell the stories of that machine’s life in service through environmental and digital storytelling installations.
