Louisville Free Public Library Parkland Library
The Parkland Library, one of Louisville’s original nine Carnegie libraries, was built in the early 20th century. Closed in the 1980s due to budget cuts, it sat vacant for 15 years before being used by various city agencies. This rehabilitation and addition return the building to its original function, while resolving accessibility challenges and supporting modern library service.
To preserve the historic character, the original clay tile roof was removed and reinstalled, and the exterior facade was cleaned. Interior details were restored, including stained wood bookcases that line the perimeter, echoing the building’s original design. New service points and varied seating arrangements provide flexibilty while honoring the spirit of the original layout.
The addition is a modest, modern extension that complements the historic structure. A simple brick form is tucked beneath the original roofline, with large east and west windows revealing the new maker space and children’s area. Sculpted wall forms reinterpret the curves and basket-weave details associated with the original windows. New sidewalks and outdoor terraces extend from the entrance, creating inviting public spaces that support outdoor programming and reinforce the library’s role in this walkable neighborhood.
