Alice Lloyd College School of Business | Pippa Passes, Kentucky
For nearly a century, Alice Lloyd College has provided quality academic programs to “qualified mountain students”, regardless of their ability to pay. And at a time when Central Appalachia’s economy is reeling and unemployment rates in the region are disproportionately high, the Alice Lloyd College School of Business & Entrepreneurial Studies brings a ray of light to the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. The School of Business & Entrepreneurial Studies, a new academic initiative for the College, promotes regional economic development by teaching and training current and future business leaders and entrepreneurs to help stem the tide of poverty in the area.
JRA Architects has proudly partnered with Alice Lloyd College over the years to fuse modern technologies integral to high academic performance with the historic character of the campus, and when plans were announced for a new business school at the College, we were excited to load up our backpacks and head back to school. Since an existing building was chosen to house the new School, we began a complete renovation to meet the unique criteria of the project. JRA was tasked with revising the internal plan to integrate technology into comfortable classroom settings that would create the most nurturing of academic environments. The building that was selected held a special place in the hearts of many alumni because of its venerable charm, so we were careful to maintain that exterior character while applying the principles of adaptive reuse for the interior.
For JRA, an opportunity to truly make a difference – not only in the lives of each student that attends the School, but for the entire Central Appalachian region – is what makes our work meaningful and fulfilling.
